Designing a Furniture Layout for a Long Living Room: It’s All About Creating Zones
Large, long living rooms can be awkward if not designed well. For the living room in this 1920’s traditional style home there were several challenges.
Before
First, the room had a lot of openings. Four windows, two french doors and a large cased opening into the Foyer. Second, there wasn’t enough furniture in the room to make it feel cozy. Third, the furniture that was in the room was too big. Paying attention to scale and how people move through the room was really important to creating a comfortable environment!

The key to creating a beautifully curated space with a long footprint is to create “zones” for seating. Function is the first thing we look at along with proper scale when starting on a new design. Here, we created three separate seating areas within our new layout.
These three areas can be used all at once when entertaining a large group, yet they feel cozy enough for a smaller gathering. We incorporated sofas, lounge chairs, a sectional, and ottomans to create variety and flexibility.
Ottomans can be used for more seating with a big crowd and the petite corner sectional is cozy for reading, with a table for drinks, books or a laptop. We love how this room came together!
